Should a 1099 independent contractor have occupational accident?

Occupational Accident Insurance vs. Workers Compensation Insurance… should a 1099 independent contractor have Occupational Accident?

Workers Compensation and Occupational Accident are two distinct types of coverage, although they both relate to workplace accidents or injuries.  A quick chart helps identify similarities and differences.

Workers’ Compensation Occupational Accident
Covers employees Covers independent contractors
Provides coverage for an accidental injury in the course of work or work-related illness Provides coverage for an accidental injury in the course of work
Mandatory in most states Not typically mandated by law
Benefits and limits specified by state law Flexible options for benefits and limits
Employer pays the policy premium Options allow contractors or company to pay premium

Should independent contractors have Occupational Accident Insurance? Absolutely.  Without it these 1099 independent contractors may not have any coverage for an on-the-job injury.  Occupational Accident Insurance can provide peace of mind. If an independent contractor is injured while working, Occupational Accident Insurance can provide coverage for medical expenses, payments to their family, and replacing lost income.

Help prepare your clients from financial exposure and recommend Occupational Accident Insurance for their 1099 workers.

Calling all professional drivers: Tips to beat the heat on the road

Summer is a casual, laid-back time for most. For professional drivers, however, the summer months create additional risks and hazardous road conditions.

With increased road congestion and inevitable weather-related issues, drivers are constantly on high alert to deliver their loads safely and on time. An accident can catastrophically impact the driver’s livelihood. Without proper coverage, the injured 1099 driver and the motor carrier can be financially exposed. Offering Occupational Accident insurance can provide accidental death & dismemberment, accident medical and accident disability. The policy is triggered by an on-the-job accident.

Here are some quick tips for truckers and trucking professionals delivering during the summer months:

  1. Check the truck frequently
  2. Plan routes and monitor weather, especially pop up storms
  3. Be mindful of pedestrians
  4. Be cautious of construction zones
  5. Maintain the truck
  6. Slow down and increase following distance
  7. Carry essential supplies
  8. Maintain communication
  9. Rest often

While this is not an exhaustive list of tips, it can be used as a foundation for trucking professionals to refer to during the summer months. Stay safe on the road.

Occupational Accident Insurance: an important coverage for independent contractors

On-the-job accidents are inevitable. In many jurisdictions, 1099 independent contractors are not considered employees and typically aren’t covered by Workers’ Compensation in the event of a work-related injury. It is important for 1099 workers to have Occupational Accident Insurance. This protection can provide independent contractors – and the companies they are providing services for – peace of mind in case of an accident or injury while on the job. While specific policies and coverage may vary, having Occupational Accident Insurance can help mitigate the financial risks associated with an occupational accident.

Help prepare your clients from financial exposure and recommend Occupational Accident Insurance for their 1099 independent contractor drivers. Our Morristown team supports two local nonprofits

This Spring, our Morristown, NJ office community engagement team is in full swing, providing hands on support to two local nonprofits. They partnered again this year with Deirdre’s House, a community advocacy center for children of abuse and neglect. They cleaned and decorated the home for the season, freshened its backyard, and hosted a food and hygiene supply drive (collecting more than 5 full boxes of supplies). The team also supported nourish.NJ by compiling 35 breakfast packs that included messages of encouragement for the recipients. We appreciate our teammates continual care for their community!
