This summer, a volunteer outing for our Highland team meant a day outdoors helping with “habitat restoration” at the Blackwell Nursery for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage (IL) County. Habitat restoration refers to improving the plant community within a particular ecosystem. For team Highland, these efforts included removing invasive plants, separating seeds, and planting the area with native species. The purpose is to create plant communities that can support the plants and wildlife that are normally associated with that particular ecosystem. Thanks to their gardening stewardship, they can look forward to seeing the natural beauty that will grow!
