#MLKDay is a chance for us to highlight Dr. King’s vision of diversity and inclusion through our actions. This day is an opportunity to support local communities and neighbors by giving back in some way – whether it’s through an act of kindness, volunteerism, or taking time to learn about MLK’s legacy. We’ve put together a brief list of educational resources to help:
- Speeches: This PBS article includes links to the famous “I have a dream” speech, the speech he made after the walk from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, as well “I’ve been to the mountaintop,” his final public speech.
- Books: Families may consider “Martin’s Big Words” a 40-page book appropriate for all ages that relies on brief phrases, along with watercolor images to depict Dr. King’s journey and social justice efforts.
- Documentary: “Eyes on the Prize” is a six-part series on the civil rights movement with substantial actual footage and interviews. Although it was produced in 1987, it is still considered one of the strongest storytelling films in this category. It is available on several streaming services.
- Movies: This Forbes article lists ten films to consider viewing ranging from “Selma” to last year’s “One Night in Miami.”
Additionally, Intact offices will be closed on January 17 to observe a day of reflection and acts of kindness.
